The small traditional City of Spittal is often referred to as "Spittal am Millstätter See", due to its proximity to the lake and lies at the confluence of the Lieser and Drau rivers.
It is easily accessible by road from all European countries and is served well by many of the major airlines. Both Klagenfurt and Ljubjana Airport can be reached in under 1 hour with Salzburg & Graz taking no more than 2 hours. The city is dominated by the "Schloss Porcia" built between 1533 & 1597 it is one of the few Austrian builidngs in true Renaissance style, and it incorporates some exquisite Italian designs. Throughout the summer months musical and drama events are held in the Castle courtyard catering for everyone´s taste in the Arts. There are plenty of shopping opportunites in the City with most major brands being available to those averse to a little retail therapy. It boasts a brand new Shopping Centre with a multiplex Cinema showing all the up to date films daily. For lovers of sport there is a swimming pool (indoor and outdoor), Ice-skating rink, skateboard park, tennis courts, cycle tracks, Goldeck Ski resort, indoor bowling alleys, nightclubs and a wonderful variety of Restaurants, Gasthofs and traditional cake shops to tempt you into putting on a few pounds before you depart. For the younger visitor there are, of course, night clubs and discotheques. It is also possible within a 10 minute journey to take part in all watersports, fish, paraglide, rollerblade around the lake or just take in the view and watch everyone else enjoying themselves. Events for the holidaymakers run throughout the summer months and include, Kid´s week, World Bodypainting competition, European Beach volleyball, Candlelight shopping, Kid´s theatre workshop, Kirchtag (Church day) with music and entertainment, Salamanca festival, guided tours and walks. In Winter of course the Goldeck Ski Resort offers all winter sports along with the longest Black ski run in the Alps (8.5Km). There are also events on Goldeck Ski resort held weekly. Carinthia offers its tourists the Kärnten Card costing 34 Euros for Adults and 14 Euros for children ages 6-15 for up to 2 weeks and 50 Euros for Adults and 24 Euros for children ages 6-15 for upt to 5 weeks. These prices are only for up to 2 children - 3rd and any others go free!!! This card will turn a holidy into an adventure - even if the sun doesn´t shine it won´t spoil your day. This card covers over 100 major tourist attractions including Boat trips on the lakes, Cable Cars, Panoramic roads, Musuems, Natural beauty experiences, adventure swimming baths (indoor & outdoor), other means of transport - Steam train, Village bus on Weissensee and the Tschu-Tschu train at Rennweg/Katschberg.
